Funding Agencies Requiring Data Management Plans
Below are some examples of data management plan requirements. For information regarding other agencies, see the DMPTool's funding agency templates.
"Investigators are expected to share with other researchers, at no more than incremental cost and within a reasonable time, the primary data, samples, physical collections, and other supporting materials created or gathered in the course of work under NSF grants. Grantees are expected to encourage and facilitate such sharing."
"NIH has issued the Data Management and Sharing policy (effective January 25, 2023) to promote the sharing of scientific data. Sharing scientific data accelerates biomedical research discovery, in part, by enabling validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets, and promoting data for future studies."
USDA-NIFA: National Institute of Food and Agriculture
"NIFA's mission is to invest in and advance agricultural research, education, and extension to solve societal challenges. NIFA's investments in transformative science directly support the long-term prosperity and global preeminence of U.S. agriculture. Increased access to scientific results, education, and extension data from NIFA-funded projects is critical to achieving NIFA's vision to catalyze transformative discoveries, education, and engagement to address agricultural challenges. Therefore, an appropriate data management plan should be a core component of the research, education, and extension planning for applications submitted to NIFA."
"The PI or other appropriate research lead should determine which data should be the subject of the Data Management Plan (DMP) and, in the DMP, propose which data should be shared and/or preserved in accordance with the requirements of this policy."
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
"NOAA Programs shall strive to ensure that environmental data produced as a result of NOAA-funded Grants, Cooperative Agreements, or Contracts are made publicly accessible, in a timely fashion (typically within 2 years), free of charge or at no more than the cost of reproduction, and that any exceptions or extensions are explicitly justified on a case-by-case basis."
National Endowment for the Humanities - Digital Humanities Implementation Grant
"The data management plan should be short (no more than two pages) and will be submitted as a document supplementing a grant application. The plan will address two main topics: (1) What data are generated by your research? (2) What is your plan for managing the data?"
"Scientific progress depends on the sharing of information and on the replication of findings. Maximal and appropriate openness remains a core value of the Sloan Foundation. In the appendix, proposers are asked to delineate where and in what format project data will be stored or archived at the conclusion of the project; and whether there are any legal issues that will complicate sharing and access to the archived data."
